Despite some critics arguing that Google relies too heavily on AI to enhance photos, the tech giant from Mountain View remains a leader in the camera phone market. For those who are not fond of the Pixel Camera app, there are excellent alternatives available. However, users who prefer the Pixel Camera app should prepare for an upgrade with the introduction of Android 16’s Material 3 Expressive redesign.
Google is currently revamping its Android applications with the Material 3 Expressive design, having already rolled out changes to some apps like Gmail. According to an APK teardown by Android Authority, the Pixel Camera app is next on the list for this redesign. A glimpse into the updated Pixel Camera app has been provided by Android Police, who successfully activated the new design in version 9.9.106.767010485.16.
The redesign was noted particularly in the app’s Settings page, which offers a fresh, colorful look that departs from the previous design. The new interface features brown toggle switches that indicate whether a feature is turned on or off with a tick and an “x,” providing a clearer and more intuitive user experience. In addition to the toggle switches, the updated Settings page boasts a brown-toned background with white control options housed in rounded boxes, all spaced out for easier navigation.
While these changes currently focus on the Settings page, it is expected that Google will also implement design updates to the camera viewfinder. Although a specific release date for the redesigned Pixel Camera app has not been announced, users can anticipate updates possibly arriving later this year, coinciding with the rollout of Material 3 Expressive for Android 16 via a Pixel Feature Drop.
