Samsung may be considering significant changes for the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s S Pen, potentially removing its digitizer to accommodate Qi2 wireless charging and achieve a slimmer design, according to recent rumors. This information surfaced from sources on social media and suggests that while the S Pen has already undergone major modifications in recent years, this latest shift could bring notable benefits. The digitizer is an important component of the S Pen, enabling advanced functionalities that distinguish it from a regular stylus, such as pressure sensitivity and interaction with the screen while hovering. The last few years have not been particularly favorable for S Pen enthusiasts, starting with the discontinuation of the Galaxy Note line, followed by the removal of Bluetooth support from the S25 Ultra, which was reportedly underutilized.
The proposed removal of the digitizer could free up internal space in the device, allowing for new features, primarily the incorporation of full Qi2 charging compatibility. This next-generation wireless charging would employ magnets to optimize alignment between charging coils, offering faster charging speeds and improved convenience. While the S25 Ultra was Qi2 Ready, it lacked the necessary magnets to fully leverage this technology. Additionally, the rumor suggests that this modification may allow for an even thinner phone, although it remains to be seen if Samsung is aiming for a significant reduction in thickness.
Importantly, there are indications that Samsung does not intend to eliminate the S Pen from the S26 Ultra entirely. Speculations suggest that alternative solutions may be developed, potentially resulting in the S Pen being an external accessory rather than being housed within the phone, similar to the S Pen Fold Edition. However, none of these details have been officially confirmed at this point.
