Google Wallet Unveils Material 3 Design Upgrade: New Look Rolling Out Soon

Google Wallet has seen significant advancements recently, gaining support from 36 new banks and credit unions across the United States within just two months. The app has also integrated Klarna for Buy Now, Pay Later options and welcomed Iowa into its digital ID features.

Additionally, users will soon have the ability to add custom passes in a more intuitive manner. One of the exciting features in development is the ‘Nearby Passes notification’ support.

This feature will leverage your location to automatically display relevant cards or passes when you are near a specific venue. While this enhancement is promising, the new design has not yet been widely released; there is currently only one report of the redesign appearing in the wild, but this is still a hopeful sign for users.

Once the redesign rolls out, several changes will be noticeable. A new Google Wallet logo will replace the current “Wallet” text at the top left of the app.

Pass pills will have a larger appearance than before, and a new ‘+’ floating action button (FAB) will replace the full ‘+ Add to Wallet’ button, making it more user-friendly. Additionally, users will see a new pill dedicated to Archived passes and containers for all recent transactions on the activity page.

Though the update feels like a straightforward redesign, focusing on refinement and a modern aesthetic, availability has been sporadic. As an example, the new design has yet to reach my Pixel 8, despite running the latest stable version of Google Wallet.

Have you experienced the new interface yet? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.
