Google is set to phase out Google Assistant across all platforms, including vehicles, with a complete removal expected by the end of 2025. The transition to Google’s new AI assistant, Gemini, is evident through recent findings in the Google Assistant app for Android Automotive OS (AAOS). This indicates that Gemini is being integrated into the operating system, with expectations that it will soon take precedence over Google Assistant in both Android Auto and AAOS. The shift is particularly noteworthy as it comes less than a year after the launch of Google Assistant’s revamped interface on AAOS.
Despite the recent updates, Google appears ready to replace the familiar assistant with the new Gemini. By the end of 2025, Google Assistant will be retired not only on smartphones and smart home devices but across virtually all surfaces including cars. In the coming weeks, certain devices such as specific TVs and Fitbit wearables are also anticipated to lose Google Assistant functionality, further emphasizing this strategic shift. The deprecation will extend to in-vehicle systems that have historically relied on Google Assistant.
Evidence suggests that Gemini is set to dominate Android Auto, and new indicators point to a similar future for the Android Automotive operating system. For those unfamiliar, Android Auto enables users to project their smartphones onto their vehicle’s display, while AAOS functions as an integrated system within vehicles, operating independently of a smartphone. The early strings within the system hint that users may soon encounter a Gemini notification on their vehicle displays, encouraging a switch to the AI-powered assistant. A prompt for ‘Try later’ suggests that Gemini will be available on AAOS before the complete phase-out of Google Assistant, allowing users ample time to adapt to this new technology.
