Google’s Gboard app is set to introduce new features, including a symbol access method inspired by iPads, where users can flick downwards on keys instead of relying on long presses. This innovation aims to benefit users who frequently utilize diacritics and symbols, expanding access beyond just iPad users as it is likely to be available for all Android devices. The latest beta version of Gboard, as reviewed by code analyst AssembleDebug, also brings changes to the number row settings. Users will soon have the option to toggle the visibility of the number row when entering passwords, thereby optimizing screen space on smaller devices.
This option is particularly beneficial for individuals who use password managers and prefer not to manually input passwords. In addition to these functionalities, Gboard is also introducing reversible rounded keys. Users can now choose between rounded or rectangular keys, or completely remove the border between them. This dropdown menu aims to enhance user customization, especially for testers who previously expressed dissatisfaction with design changes.
Another notable addition is the “Enter a prompt” feature within the Writing Tools menu, which joins the existing Proofread and Rephrase options. Although the specifics of this feature remain unclear, it could facilitate guided text rephrasing or generate new text seamlessly within the application. While these features are not guaranteed to make it to the stable release, their optional nature and the ongoing integration of AI in applications suggest that at least some will likely be included in future updates. A timeline for their arrival has not yet been announced.
