Google Aims to Simplify Automatic Charging for Apps and Games

Google Play’s help page has recently hinted at a new feature called “Automatic, balance-based purchase.” This opt-in function would allow developers to automatically charge users’ default payment method when their in-app currency or item balance drops below a predefined threshold. The aim is to enhance user convenience by minimizing interruptions and the need for frequent manual purchases.

Users will have the ability to set their minimum balance and recharge amounts. They can also opt out at any time, ensuring they remain in control of their spending. While Google is responsible for managing these payments, the decision to implement this feature ultimately lies with the app developers.

As of now, no formal announcement from Google has been made, but we might expect further details during the upcoming Google I/O event. According to the documentation, developers can design in-app plans that facilitate automatic purchases based on user engagement. This means that purchases will only be triggered if a user’s in-app currency or item balance falls below the established limit.

This system is intended to prevent interruptions during activities, such as making virtual gifts while watching live streams on social media. Users involved in this program will be informed each time a transaction occurs, as receipts will be emailed for every charge. Although users can set their preferences for minimum balances and recharge amounts, charges will only commence when the balance reaches the threshold.

Additionally, they will have the freedom to pause, cancel, or modify their purchase plans without affecting items already purchased. While Google is active in facilitating these transactions, the responsibility of rollout lies with developers, and the official kick-off date remains unclear. It’s expected that more concrete information might surface during the Google I/O event in May.
