Google Photos is undergoing internal testing for an innovative new feature that will allow users to share albums and memories using QR codes. This functionality can be accessed through the share sheet within an album or memory, distinguishing it from the existing Quick Share option that is currently available for individual photos. At this time, there are no announcements regarding when the public will have access to this feature.
Renowned for being one of the top photo-editing apps on Android, Google Photos provides users with powerful tools for enhancing their smartphone images. Users often showcase their editing work on social media or share those photos with friends and family using the Quick Share feature. Now, Google appears set to expand its sharing capabilities by integrating QR code functionality.
According to details found in an APK teardown by Android Authority, the new sharing feature in version 7.26 will specifically facilitate the sharing of albums and memories via QR codes. This option is different from the Quick Share feature, which remains focused solely on individual photos. While Quick Share allows quick sharing with nearby devices, the QR code feature will provide a distinct avenue for sharing more extensive content like albums.
So how does this QR code sharing feature work? The process is straightforward; users open the desired album and tap a plus icon. This action reveals the “Show QR code” option on the share sheet.
Users can then scan the generated code with the target device. Although a hands-on video from Android Authority demonstrated the feature in action, it does not clarify several key questions, such as whether access to shared albums will be permanent or if the sender can terminate sharing after the QR code is scanned. As the feature is still being tested internally, it remains unavailable to the public.
However, the ability to utilize it through certain hacks suggests that Google may be moving closer to its official release. For now, users can continue to share photos, albums, and other files using the Quick Share method.
