Google Translate May Incorporate Duolingo’s Gamified Learning Style, But Without the Pressure

A recently uncovered feature in the code of Google Translate version 9.7.102 hints at a “Practice” function intended to enhance language learning through gamified activities, similar to what Duolingo offers. Presently in a non-functional beta phase, this feature is limited to English and Spanish and is expected to require sign-in and microphone access for users.

Google Translate is widely recognized as one of the most utilized translation tools available. Its popularity is largely attributed to its various integrations across different platforms.

Users can access Google Translate through numerous apps, such as the dedicated Translate app, Google Chrome, Lens, and the Google app, among others. The tool allows users to translate text by pasting, typing, or scribbling.

Additionally, it offers functionality for translating text in images or surroundings, transcribing speech, and engaging in a dedicated conversation mode. With approximately 250 supported languages, Google Translate is well-positioned to evolve beyond simple translations, and the discovery of the “Practice” feature indicates such an evolution.

Alongside existing options like Conversation, Microphone, and Camera modes, the upcoming toolbar may include a Practice option for users. According to reports from Android Authority, the code for this new feature, marked with a beta tag, suggests it may currently work only with the English-Spanish practice pair.

Although it is not accessible to everyone yet, it is possible to enable it manually at this time. Users attempting to access the Practice feature may encounter an error message, indicating that the functionality is not live yet.

Preliminary descriptions suggest that the feature will provide personalized practice activities, resembling a gamified approach to learning languages. The timeline for its official launch and availability remains uncertain.
