Google Drive on Android is poised to incorporate Gemini AI features, enhancing the user experience by enabling file and folder summaries, facilitating chats about documents, and supporting the creation of visuals. Initial tests of these features have revealed promising enhancements, including folder summaries, basic Q&A capabilities, and writing assistance. Though advanced functionalities like file-specific insights and automatically generated visuals have yet to be introduced, there is anticipation that these features will be available ahead of the official launch. Google has been actively integrating Gemini AI across its applications, with desktop users on the Google One AI Premium plan or those utilizing Gemini via Workspace already benefiting from this intelligent assistance.
However, the Android app has not yet received these updates, but that may change soon. Currently, users on the web version of Google Drive can access various innovative capabilities thanks to Gemini, such as summarizing various files, engaging in document discussions based on the content, fetching quick facts, and creating new visuals or files seamlessly. Recent updates to the Android app (version 2.25.170.0) suggest that similar functionalities may soon become available on mobile. Early adopters have already discovered features like folder summaries and general question responses.
Nevertheless, some desirable advancements, such as the capacity to summarize individual files or generate new visuals and documents, remain absent at this stage. Given that Gemini is still evolving, it’s likely that Google will introduce these features to the Drive app before its official rollout. On desktop, users can easily find a Gemini icon in the upper-right corner of Google Drive. By clicking this icon, they can access a dedicated side panel for Gemini, complete with options for resizing and managing chat history.
While Drive’s existing search functionality is effective, Gemini enhances this experience by allowing more natural inquiries and providing a broader scope of information.
