Google Photos has recently made a significant update for Android users by allowing editing of photos in shared albums, resolving a long-standing limitation. Until now, the ability to edit shared albums was available only on iOS and web platforms. Presently, Android users may still encounter the old “save a copy” method, but this change is expected to roll out soon. As a frequent user of Google Photos, I find it the ideal platform for safely storing memories in the cloud.
The app’s functionality for sharing images and videos is convenient and user-friendly. However, the inability to edit photos within shared albums has been a drawback, especially when sharing vacation albums with friends and family. Thankfully, Google is responding to user feedback with this long-awaited adjustment. With the latest update, editing photos or videos in shared albums on Android has become possible, effectively enhancing the utility of this feature.
Google has detailed this change on the Google Photos Help forums, outlining the process for editing shared albums. However, it’s important to note that any edits made will be visible to all users who have access to the album. Additionally, users must be the album owner to make changes. For those who prefer privacy in their edits, saving a copy remains necessary.
The editing process for shared albums mimics that of unshared images. Once the editing is complete, users can save and share the edited version, which replaces the original image. While editing tools have been available for shared albums on iOS and the web for some time, this update for Android enhances usability. Nonetheless, many Android users, including myself, have experienced the previous constraints of the app, which often required cumbersome workarounds for editing shared images.
As we await the full rollout, the old “save a copy” method remains in use, but improvements are on the horizon.
