Google’s Upcoming iPhone Surprise Could Be Something Other Than an App

Google is currently negotiating with Apple to integrate its Gemini AI technology into iPhones, with CEO Sundar Pichai aiming to finalize a deal by mid-2025. Should the agreement materialize, Gemini could become a part of Apple Intelligence, providing iPhone users with another AI option alongside ChatGPT within Siri. This potential partnership has already been hinted at by Apple, with senior VP Craig Federighi noting Gemini support and developers finding backend references to Google and OpenAI in the iOS 18.4 beta code.

Despite a wave of companies eagerly embracing AI, Apple took a more cautious approach. It wasn’t until the 2024 Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) that Apple introduced its AI initiatives under the Apple Intelligence brand. These initiatives included various features akin to those of other companies, such as a Clean Up tool for removing distractions from images, a feature called Image Playground for image generation, and writing tools aimed at streamlining email management.

A key highlight was an upgraded Siri, now set to integrate with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. However, Apple seems poised to extend its AI capabilities further with the potential addition of Gemini. This could provide iPhone users with choices between Gemini and ChatGPT, enhancing the AI experience on Apple devices.

Interestingly, while facing an antitrust lawsuit over its online search practices, including accusations of maintaining monopolistic control via contracts with companies like Apple and Samsung, Google is actively pursuing partnerships to strengthen its market position. In his testimony during the antitrust investigation, Pichai revealed discussions with Tim Cook regarding the inclusion of Gemini on iPhones. Although no formal agreement exists yet, there are indications that Apple is exploring the feasibility of integrating Gemini technology, marking a significant collaboration between the two tech giants.
