Google Contacts is set to enhance its functionality with the introduction of a “Recent activity” section in individual contact profiles. This new feature will allow users to view the most recent calls and text messages exchanged with specific contacts, providing a more straightforward way to track interactions.
Importantly, it will require user permission to access call logs and messages, ensuring that privacy is respected while facilitating easier access to interaction history. The app, which serves as Android’s default contact management tool, has made strides in functionality over the past year.
Earlier updates included the ability to assign emojis and monograms to contact pictures and a new card in the Organize tab to simplify access to sync settings and contact information. After a brief lull in significant updates, the recent discovery in the latest Google Contacts build indicates a renewed focus on improving user experience.
In this new version (4.54.40.752377034), the “Recent activity” section operates on a per-contact basis, showcasing recent calls and messages relevant to that individual. Although this feature is not yet live for all users, it may be released through a server-side update or in a future overall update.
When rolled out, it will prompt users to grant necessary permissions to display this information. The section will highlight the latest text message, whether received or sent, along with the most recent call, including relevant dates.
Once permission is granted, users can interact easily—tapping on a call entry will open the default dialer, while tapping a recent message will launch the messaging app for that specific contact. Notably, the Recent activity section will not appear for contacts without any recorded calls or messages, keeping the interface clean and focused.
