Summary
Google Messages has introduced a feature that allows full-screen animations to be triggered by single emojis. Users can now send emojis such as 🌙, 🐝, and 🥳 to activate these animations within the app. If users find the animations too excessive, they can disable the expressive animation feature in the settings of Google Messages. This latest enhancement builds on the existing functionality of Google Messages, which has long allowed users to express themselves with emojis.
The ability to trigger full-screen animations was initially rolled out in February 2024 but disappeared temporarily before returning in July. Now, the app has expanded this feature by allowing single emojis to evoke these visual effects. Reports from users on Reddit indicate that various emojis, like 🌋, 😴, and others, can activate full-screen animations with ease. Additionally, a simple “Happy Birthday” text can also trigger the same full-screen response.
In testing, users have noticed that the animations function irrespective of whether the message is sent in RCS or standard SMS formats. However, users will need to experiment with individual emojis to discover which ones activate the animations, as there is no definitive list available. It’s important to note that these animations are only activated when a single emoji is sent alone. If the emoji is included in a longer message, the full-screen effect will not occur.
While Google originally hinted at over 15 hidden animations, it remains unclear if more have been added or if it’s simply easier to trigger the existing ones. For those who find the full-screen animations overwhelming, they can turn them off by accessing **Messages Settings** and disabling the **Show expressive animations** toggle. Google seems to be implementing these changes through the latest beta version of Google Messages, so updating the app may be necessary to access these features. If the updates are still not available, users may need to wait for a broader public rollout.
