Google’s May Update Introduces New Anti-Rollback Bootloader for Pixel Devices

Google has begun to rollout the May 2025 security patches based on Android 15 to all compatible Pixel devices, including phones, tablets, and foldables. Although the changelog is relatively brief, a significant change has been introduced: the bootloader now features a new anti-rollback threshold.

This means that once users update to the May 2025 security patches, they will not be able to revert to older firmware versions. The update, identified by build number BP1A.250505.005, is being released in phases to a range of Google Android devices, from Pixel 6 to Pixel 9a.

This phased rollout will take place over the next week. The release notes indicate several fixes, including issues related to microphone quality in specific apps, Bluetooth pairing difficulties with certain smartwatches, and a bug affecting the display of secondary languages in the Quick Settings.

Notably, there is no information on resolving the delayed notifications issue that many Pixel users have experienced since the April 2025 update, meaning users will need to evaluate the new version to determine if this concern has been addressed. The importance of the new anti-rollback measures is highlighted in Google’s factory images page for this update.

The upgraded bootloader now prevents devices from reverting to older, potentially vulnerable versions. This is particularly crucial for devices with unlocked bootloaders, as it restricts malicious actors from exploiting previously patched vulnerabilities by flashing older versions.

While most users may not encounter issues due to this restriction, it could pose challenges for those interested in rooting their devices or installing custom ROMs. Overall, this update will reach all Pixel devices released since 2021, and users should check for availability in their settings as the rollout progresses.
