Android 16 is set to unveil “Live Updates,” a new notification feature that resembles iOS’s Live Activities. This feature will deliver real-time information to users through the always-on display, status bar, and lock/notification screens.
Android users can expect Live Updates to be available on smartphones and foldables in 2025, with Wear OS support anticipated to roll out in 2026, mirroring the availability of Live Activities on the Apple Watch. Google has defined suitable scenarios for Live Updates, such as ride-sharing and delivery notifications, while warning against potential misuse for advertising or spam.
Users will have the option to control this feature on a per-app basis, enabling or disabling it based on their preferences. Live Activities has been a standout feature on iOS, allowing users to access real-time updates across various apps.
Initially introduced in 2022 for the iPhone 14 Pro’s Dynamic Island, this feature has since expanded to other iPhones and seamlessly integrates with the Apple Watch. Users have long sought a comparable feature on Android, and Google appears ready to meet that demand with its Live Updates.
As part of its I/O briefing, Google provided insights into the enhancements coming to Android notifications and Live Updates. The feature is designed to enjoy higher visibility, appearing prominently on the Always-on Display and in the notification drawer, while only being pushed to lower priority if a heads-up notification occurs.
Developers will need to determine if their app notifications are appropriate for Live Updates to avoid being seen as spam. Effective use cases include ongoing or time-sensitive notifications, while ineffective use cases include promotions and casual messages.
Users will be empowered to toggle Live Updates on or off for individual apps, enhancing control over their notification experience. Have you experienced the beta version of Android 16’s Live Updates, or are you eagerly awaiting the stable release next month?
