Google is making significant strides by integrating its Gemini AI into Google Home APIs. This enhancement will unlock a variety of advanced features for the Google Home app and compatible third-party smart home devices. Among the most notable upgrades are improved functionalities for Nest cameras, such as intelligent alerts and conversational search capabilities, benefiting not only Google products but also external devices that utilize the Home API.
The integration of Gemini will enrich the Google Home Automations API, introducing features designed to streamline the automation process. Users can look forward to suggested automations, conversational creation of routines, and intelligent triggers that respond to real-time conditions in their homes. Additionally, Google is developing a “Home Summary Widget” for Pixel devices that will provide a quick overview of smart home status, allowing users to quickly assess their connected environment without launching the entire app.
Earlier developments included a ‘What’s new’ shortcut for Google Home, enabling users to access detailed app update notes more easily. Initially, this shortcut might not have seemed necessary, but it has gained relevance in light of the impending features Google plans to implement. The enhancements focus on transitioning from basic device control to creating smarter homes that intuitively understand and respond to user needs.
Google aims to encompass all Nest camera experiences within the Home APIs, allowing functionalities such as camera history, two-way communication, and live streams. Additionally, Gemini will introduce new tools like Suggested Automations, which proactively recommend relevant automations based on existing devices. Users will also be able to converse with Gemini to create specific automations tailored to their needs.
This could include using a smart camera to keep pests out of a garden at night. Lastly, the Home Summary Widget is designed to provide pertinent information about the home, adjusting its display based on the time of day. For instance, it may show the status of a smart vacuum during the day and security system updates at night.
Google is currently testing this widget with select Pixel users and plans to launch an early access program for Gemini-powered Home APIs later this year.
