Pocket is set to close its doors on July 8, 2025, with the removal of its apps from app stores beginning today, May 22. Users are urged to download their Pocket data before October 8, after which all information will be permanently deleted. Premium users can expect automatic refunds, while the Pocket Hits newsletter will transition to a new format as Ten Tabs. Mozilla officially announced Pocket’s shutdown today, marking the end of a beloved read-it-later application that has aided millions in saving and rediscovering online content.
As of today, new account sign-ups have been disabled, and the app will enter export-only mode by July 8. After that date, users will have until October 8 to retrieve their saved data. Mozilla has provided an export tool that will allow users to save their URLs, titles, notes, and highlights, although details about exporting voice notes have not been mentioned. For Pocket Premium subscribers, refunds will be automatically processed to the card used for subscription payments, eliminating the need for any action from users.
Monthly subscriptions ceased today, with annual subscribers receiving their refunds following the July shutdown. According to Mozilla, the decision to discontinue Pocket stems from changing user habits. Since acquiring Pocket in 2017, the company has enriched its curation tools and introduced the Pocket Hits newsletter. Starting June 17, the Pocket Hits newsletter will be rebranded as Ten Tabs, continuing its tradition of content curation under the same editorial team.
However, weekend editions will end, and there will be changes to the frequency of delivery unless users opt-in for the weekly schedule. This shutdown also impacts Pocket’s browser extensions and public API, which will cease to function by October 8. Mozilla encourages users to explore other content discovery tools within Firefox, focusing on web recommendations without Pocket.
