Samsung is enhancing its Calculator app in One UI 8 to improve its usability for one-handed operations. This update introduces a minor animation change, with the history section now opening from the left side. While these new features are currently available in the One UI 8 beta, users with One UI 7 can access them immediately by installing an APK.
Samsung Galaxy phones are equipped with numerous hidden features that often go unnoticed. Although many of these features are quite useful, Samsung has occasionally fallen short in delivering basic functionalities that compete with rival platforms. The Calculator app is a prime example, as it can be cumbersome for users attempting advanced mathematical calculations with one hand.
Recognizing this issue, Samsung is introducing a more thumb-friendly experience in scientific mode with the upcoming One UI 8 update. Basic calculations are straightforward and user-friendly, but the app becomes less accessible when switching to scientific mode. This transition often forces the app to landscape mode, making it challenging to use it one-handed.
According to prominent Samsung leaker @tarunvats33, the updated Calculator app will support scientific mode in portrait orientation on the One UI 8 beta. The number pad shrinks to accommodate advanced math operators when users engage the scientific mode. However, there does not seem to be a separate button for activating landscape mode directly within the app.
Additionally, the new animation feature changes how the history section appears, now sliding in from the left instead of the bottom, although the “Clear history” option remains unchanged. For those eager to experience these improvements without waiting for One UI 8, users of One UI 7 can install the APK, ensuring it is signed by Samsung for safety. Alternatively, those interested in the One UI 8 beta can expect its release soon, but make sure to update the Calculator app to version 12.5.00.17 to access the new features.
