This month, Google Wallet will discontinue its compatibility with PayPal for users in the United States. Starting June 13, any PayPal accounts currently linked to Google Wallet will be automatically removed.
However, users can still link PayPal-branded debit cards, which will remain operational. Notably, this change does not affect German users, who will continue to have access to linked PayPal accounts.
As indicated in Google’s help documentation, linking new PayPal accounts to Google Wallet has not been possible since April 11. Existing linked PayPal accounts have still functioned until now, but this will no longer be the case after June 13.
If you have recurring payments set to charge your PayPal account through Google Wallet, it is imperative to establish a new payment method in advance of the cut-off date. While direct linking of PayPal accounts will be restricted, PayPal-branded debit cards can still be utilized on the Google payments platform without interruption.
It is also important to note that starting June 13, your transaction history for purchases made using PayPal will no longer be accessible in Google Wallet. The reasoning behind Google’s decision to remove PayPal accounts remains undisclosed.
Speculation from tech analysts, such as Mishaal Rahman writing for Android Authority, suggests that this change may be connected to new tap-to-pay capabilities being introduced in the PayPal app, which is currently available in Germany. This shift could indicate that similar features may soon be introduced in the U.S. version of the app.
For those who regularly use PayPal through Google Wallet, it may be wise to explore alternative payment methods as the June deadline approaches.
