Recent analysis of the Pixel Watch companion app has unveiled an exciting new feature aimed at enhancing security. This feature will automatically lock a paired smartphone when it moves out of range of the watch, complementing existing anti-theft capabilities already available on Android devices. While specific launch details remain unknown, it is anticipated that more information will be revealed shortly. The Google Pixel Watch has been making headlines lately, particularly due to several updates related to Wear OS 6.
Among these updates is the introduction of Adaptive Charging for Pixel Watch models. Additionally, a teardown of the Pixel Watch app (version 3.5.0.758720535) conducted by Android Authority has revealed important code strings hinting at the automatic phone-locking functionality. Notable strings include “lock_on_disconnect_summary,” which states that the phone will lock when it disconnects from the watch, and “lock_on_disconnect_title,” encouraging users to lock their phone when left behind. Although the feature could not be fully activated by Android Authority, a Telegram user named nailsad_eleos managed to access a section within the app’s Security page labeled “Lock phone when left behind.”
This functionality will trigger an automatic lock for the paired smartphone upon losing its connection to the Pixel Watch. The precise distance required for the phone to be considered out of range has yet to be clarified. This feature is expected to complement existing security measures such as Android’s Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock, providing users with added peace of mind when they misplace their devices. Although the feature has been identified in the app, it is not yet active, leaving its release timeline uncertain.
However, given the potential significance for Pixel Watch users, it is likely that Google will implement this feature sooner rather than later.
