Android 16 Set for Major Visual Update Release on September 3

Google recently launched Android 16 for compatible Pixel phones and tablets, though it did not include several key features. Notably absent are the new Material 3 Expressive UI and a desktop mode similar to DeX. These anticipated features are set to debut in a future update later this year.

Although Google hasn’t officially announced a specific release date for this upcoming build, reports suggest potential timelines. According to sources, such as those cited by Mishaal Rahman, the new Material 3 Expressive UI and desktop mode are expected to be part of the Android 16’s first Quarterly Platform Release (QPR1) scheduled for September 3, 2025. The source code for this version is anticipated to be shared with the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) a couple of weeks earlier, on August 20, 2025.

This date aligns with rumors surrounding the unveiling of the Pixel 10 lineup, making it likely that new devices will ship with the Android 16 QPR1 build pre-installed. While the desktop mode will feature in the first QPR of Android 16, Google plans to reserve some multitasking capabilities solely for tablets. Additionally, these might not be available by default, potentially remaining hidden in the developer options menu.

It’s crucial to note that while these dates are currently estimated, they are subject to change as there are still several months ahead. Furthermore, the Android 16 QPR1 release will differ from a later minor SDK release containing new APIs and features, projected for December 2025. As the Material 3 Expressive UI is officially rolling out with Android 16 QPR1, other Android manufacturers may delay integrating it into their user interfaces until the following year.
