Summary
Gemini AI has made a significant enhancement to Google Sheets, allowing users to create live and editable charts directly within their spreadsheets. This feature, which started rolling out to Google Workspace users on June 9, enables users to specify data for both the y-axis and x-axis, and Gemini will then insert the corresponding chart into a new Sheets tab.
This new capability represents a leap forward from Gemini’s previous chart generation tools, which only produced static images that did not adjust with data changes. Now, users can generate dynamic charts that automatically update as spreadsheet data is modified.
Editable and Live Charts Built by AI
Using this feature is straightforward. Users simply click on the Gemini icon in the Google Sheets side panel and provide a prompt detailing the data to be used for the x-axis and y-axis.
Gemini will generate a preview of the chart in the side panel, and users can insert it into their spreadsheet as needed. The created chart is fully customizable; users can alter the title, color scheme, and date range.
Importantly, the chart updates automatically with data changes linked to the newly created tab. However, it is essential to note that changes to the original spreadsheet data will not affect the chart.
Limitations
Despite this advancement, there are limitations. Not every chart type is editable, and some complex visualizations may still be generated as static images.
Additionally, Sheets that contain over one million cells or exhibit inconsistent data formatting may not support this feature. Nevertheless, this enhancement simplifies the chart creation process.
With just a clear dataset and an effective prompt, Gemini can handle the heavy lifting. The feature is now available to users of Business Standard, Plus, and Enterprise plans, as well as those using the older Gemini add-on.
Users should ensure their version of Sheets is updated and that Gemini is enabled in their Workspace settings.
