The Google app receives a subtle Material 3 refresh with expressive design updates.

Android’s Material 3 Expressive redesign is set to transform the appearance and experience of Android and its applications in various ways. Some of the noticeable features include a simplified quick settings panel and lively animations, while other updates may not be immediately apparent but will enhance the overall polish and cohesiveness of the interface. Recent findings from an APK teardown conducted by AssembleDebug reveal minor enhancements coming to the Google app.

Although these three updates may seem insignificant individually, together they contribute to maintaining a fresh and enjoyable Android experience. The first notable change involves the status bar, which now boasts a translucent gradient background. This small design improvement provides a more modern, polished look, making notifications easier to see in light mode, though it is less pronounced in dark mode.

Another update enhances the search progress bar, which has been given a slightly thicker appearance with rounded corners. This subtle adjustment offers a softer, more prominent presentation, aligning smoothly with the overall Material 3 Expressive aesthetic. The most functional change targets the bottom navigation bar.

Currently, the tab icons remain visible as users scroll through their feeds, but Google is experimenting with a new feature that hides these tabs when scrolling down. This alteration reduces visual clutter, allowing users to concentrate on the content at the bottom of the screen, while the icons reappear upon scrolling up. Additional discoveries reveal a sleek new loading animation that activates when users reach the bottom of their feed, accompanied by a “Refresh” button that appears beneath the search bar during scrolling.

Most of these updates are expected to roll out gradually in the coming days and will not be restricted to Pixel devices, as they are part of an app update rather than a broader Android modification.
