Upload a PDF to Drive and see Gemini summarize it with Google’s latest update!

Google’s Gemini AI suite has been steadily integrated into Workspace apps since its initial launch in June of last year. This suite of features has significantly evolved, with updates including automatic email summaries in Gmail, summarization capabilities in Google Docs for Android, and new contextual chips in Google Drive that guide users to leverage Gemini effectively. Among these enhancements, Gemini’s utility in Google Drive has become more pronounced. Users can utilize Gemini to summarize files and folders seamlessly through natural conversation prompts like “Learn about a file in Drive” or “Ask about this folder.”

Recently, a new feature called “Catch me up” was introduced, which identifies changes in shared documents, such as edits and comments in Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Google aims to enhance Gemini’s functionality on Drive with the introduction of PDF summary cards, which improve the efficiency of summarizing PDF documents. Previously, users needed to manually access summaries via the Gemini side panel. However, with the new feature, Gemini will automatically summarize the contents of a PDF as soon as it is opened.

This proactive approach not only provides a quick overview of the document but also presents relevant “clickable actions.” These actions may include options like drafting a sample proposal or summarizing key takeaways in a table. By selecting any of these options, users can easily initiate the desired task directly from the Gemini side panel in Drive. The rollout of this new PDF summarization feature is currently underway and supports over 25 languages.

PDFs will open in an overlay file previewer by default, although users have the option to change their settings for a different viewing experience. It may take up to 15 days for the feature to be accessible to all users, but it is currently limited to those on specific Google Workspace plans, including Business Standard, Enterprise Standard, and more.
