NotebookLM is emerging as one of Google’s most innovative tools, yet many users may not fully appreciate its capabilities. Initially, it gained attention for its Audio Overviews feature, which transforms source material into engaging podcast-style recaps. This feature is designed to sound like natural conversation rather than robotic narration. Following its introduction in the Gemini app and Discover’s Daily Listen, Google is now experimenting with Audio Overviews directly on the mobile Search homepage.
According to a recent blog post from Google, the Audio Overviews leverage the latest Gemini models to provide users with a hands-free method to absorb information. Currently, this feature is only available as a US-based experiment within Search Labs, and it operates solely in English. When activated, users will notice a “Generate Audio Overview” button appearing during their searches. Clicking this button brings up a user-friendly audio player complete with controls for play/pause, volume, and speed.
However, the appearance of the Audio Overview button may vary, as it relies on Google’s assessment of whether a search warrants such a feature. Interestingly, the button is positioned towards the bottom of the results page, below the AI Overview, ads, and regular links, which may make it less visible to users. Generating an Audio Overview can take up to 40 seconds, as the system processes the information and synthesizes the audio. More complex or niche searches may require even more time.
This new feature introduces AI-generated hosts who present the information in a dynamic, conversational format. Additionally, Google enhances transparency by providing direct links to some sources used, right beneath the audio player. In essence, this development indicates a shift towards a voice-first approach in search technology, which may benefit users with visual impairments. However, until the accuracy improves, it remains a supplementary feature rather than a comprehensive solution, best viewed as an intriguing option rather than a full replacement for detailed reading.
