Shortly after the release of the stable Android 16, Google swiftly introduced QPR1 Beta 2 for Pixel users. This update came alongside the June Pixel Feature Drop and brought several notable enhancements, including an upgraded desktop mode and flexible window tiling. Yet, a subtle change that catches attention is the new launch animation for Gemini, the AI assistant.
This fresh animation may be easy to overlook but it’s undeniably impressive once noticed. As reported by 9to5Google, the new Gemini overlay animation features the screen gently retracting to accommodate the AI assistant. Beyond just aesthetics, this update also adds haptic feedback and maintains traditional options such as “Share screen with Live” and “Ask about screen.” These enhancements aim to provide a better user experience by integrating visual and tactile elements.
However, there is a quirk in Beta 2: the haptic feedback does not engage when accessing Gemini via the power button. This inconsistency is likely due to a software bug, as the standard Power menu still provides the expected tactile response. When the new animation is triggered, users will notice the screen appearing to shrink slightly as the overlay rises into view.
Familiar prompts like “Share Screen with Live” and “Ask about screen” will be readily available, making the interaction smoother. Keep in mind, though, that as part of a limited rollout, not all Pixel devices will have this feature immediately. While these tweaks are exciting, it looks like Google is reserving its major Material 3 Expressive redesign for a later date.
According to details from Mishaal Rahman via Android Authority, users can expect the comprehensive visual overhaul to be unveiled on September 3.
