Wear OS is set to undergo a significant design transformation, aligning itself with the recent updates to Android’s design language. At the core of this revitalization is Material 3 Expressive, Google’s latest design style characterized by its vibrant, dynamic, and refined aesthetic. The initial glimpses of these changes appeared in the Wear OS 6 Developer Preview, and now we have a detailed look at how the new design is being implemented in core applications.
Gmail and Google Maps on Wear OS are among the first to embrace this updated look, with noticeable and exciting changes. According to Android Authority, the revamped Google Maps features a sleek user interface that moves away from the previous structure. It now sports a modern two-row layout and introduces bold, pill-shaped controls.
The most prominent button now conveniently opens the map layer, enhancing usability for smartwatch users. The updates were detected on a Galaxy Watch 4 using Maps version 25.23.01.766241648.W. Key modifications include larger icons, improved spacing, and the introduction of pill-shaped buttons for “Home” and “Work” shortcuts.
Moreover, recent destinations are displayed in card-style containers, complete with a “Show more” button that reveals up to eight additional spots. This new approach simplifies navigation, placing essential features front and center for easy access. In tandem with these updates, Gmail is also receiving a striking redesign.
The refreshed app, noted in version 2025.05.19.760532898, showcases the bold aesthetics of Material 3 Expressive. While the rollout is gradual, users who have access can expect to see updated backgrounds and rearrangements of key buttons, such as “Mark as unread,” “Reply,” and “Open on phone.” These enhancements not only make the app visually appealing but also align with Google’s ambition of creating a more personalized device experience.
