Google Chrome has been experiencing significant glitches for users across various operating systems and devices. Last month, we highlighted a major issue where Chrome would crash immediately upon being launched, disrupting many users’ everyday tasks.
This problem was noted on Android, Windows, and macOS platforms, leading to speculation that either a recent update or specific ad-blockers were to blame. While the exact cause of the crashes on macOS and Android remained ambiguous, clarity has emerged regarding Windows users.
Ellen T, a Google Community Manager, revealed that for some users, the problem stems from the Microsoft Family Safety feature. This tool is designed to help parents and schools enforce parental controls and digital content filters, but it appears to be causing compatibility issues with Chrome.
Interestingly, while Microsoft Family Safety is also available on Android devices, it is unclear if users on that platform are similarly affected. Furthermore, other browsers on Windows seem to function normally, indicating that the issue lies specifically with Chrome and its interaction with the Family Safety feature.
For those affected by this issue on Windows, there is a practical solution to restore Chrome’s operation. Parents or school administrators can take action to fix the problem.
They need to select the user account experiencing the Chrome issue and either disable the “Filter inappropriate websites” option under the Edge tab or navigate to the Windows tab and unblock Chrome from the Apps & Games section. Despite these user-implemented fixes, it remains Microsoft’s responsibility to address the underlying bug.
As of now, there has been no official word from Microsoft regarding a comprehensive rollout of a solution, though guidance has been offered to users seeking assistance with getting Chrome operational again.
