Samsung to Enhance One of Android’s Top Safety Features for Improved User Protection

Earthquake detection is an essential safety feature offered by Android, leveraging crowdsourced accelerometer data from millions of devices to predict earthquakes and alert users seconds in advance. This feature has existed for several years, and while other manufacturers have not significantly changed it, Samsung plans to enhance it with its upcoming One UI 8 skin, which is based on Android 16. According to leaker @GalaxyTechie, Samsung is set to integrate its version of the “Earthquake warnings” feature, making it visually consistent with the One UI design. Currently, the earthquake alert interface developed by Google maintains a Pixel-style UI, even on other Android devices.

This integration will make the feature more user-friendly for Samsung users. Google’s service alerts users only when an earthquake reaches a magnitude of 4.5 or higher. However, Samsung will introduce a customizable approach, allowing users to set their own intensity thresholds. During the day, users can choose a danger level from 1 to 4, while at night, they can select a different threshold to avoid sleep disruptions caused by minor tremors.

For earthquakes below the chosen level, Galaxy phones will display a simple notification. In contrast, a full-screen warning will be issued for significant quakes that meet or exceed the set threshold. Additionally, Samsung’s warnings will include vital information about emergency shelters and contacts nearby, facilitating rapid response during a major event. Users will even have the option to preview these notifications, providing insight into their potential disruption.

Unlike Google, Samsung will also offer a history of past earthquake warnings, enhancing users’ access to crucial information. These earthquake warnings are anticipated to debut on Samsung’s new foldable devices.
