Android Auto’s Light Theme Approaches Final Readiness for Launch

Modern smartphones have the ability to automatically adjust display themes depending on the time of day, along with manual options for users to choose from. However, Android Auto screens have experienced a different journey.

Since 2019, Google eliminated the light theme option, defaulting to a dark mode. A couple of years ago, signs pointed to a possible resurgence of Android Auto’s light theme, and more recent developments have confirmed that Google is finalizing its return.

According to a report by Android Authority, code investigator AssembleDebug examined version 14.7.152544 of the Android Auto app and was able to uncover the light theme option, including related elements in the settings. Upon activating it, themes could be adjusted to Automatic, Light, or Dark under Settings > Display > Theme.

While the delay has been significant, the new feature is on the verge of launch. The updated settings will introduce a Theme subsection that reconfigures the existing “Day/Night mode for maps.”

Although it remains uncertain if this adjustment will persist when the new theming choices are fully released, it is noteworthy that Google Maps already accommodates light and dark themes for navigation, while other Android Auto UI components remain in dark mode. Consequently, this shift has been highly anticipated.

Initially, it was speculated that the light and auto theming option would debut at I/O 2025, but this rollout did not occur. Nonetheless, as Android Authority points out, the presence of hidden light theme elements within the most recent app version indicates that a broader launch is imminent.

In addition to the light theme updates, Google is expanding Android Auto’s capabilities. The company is working to enable support for more app categories, starting with browser and video applications.

However, users will need a smartphone with Android 16, and this feature will only work with select compatible vehicles. Moreover, Android Auto users can look forward to the introduction of third-party weather apps, which recently moved beyond the beta phase on the platform.
