Android 14 Returns to Chromecast Following a Bumpy Launch Experience

In recent months, Google has shifted its focus from the beloved Chromecast with Google TV to the newer and pricier Google TV Streamer. However, the tech giant has not forgotten its classic streaming device.

In March 2025, Google started releasing the Android 14 update for the Chromecast with Google TV, intended to enhance system stability. Unfortunately, the update was plagued by several bugs, leading to issues such as external USB devices malfunctioning and unexpected app crashes.

As a result, the rollout was halted. Now, it appears that Google has addressed those concerns and has resumed the rollout of the Android 14 update for Chromecast with Google TV.

According to 9to5Google, the new update, version UTTC.241218.008.H1.13427172, is accessible to both users who previously updated to Android 14 and those who missed out during the initial rollout. The update’s changelog primarily mirrors its predecessor.

Google mentioned that it upgrades the system to Android 14 TV while continuing to improve system stability, with the patch date still set to January 2025. Feedback from users on Reddit indicates that some of the initial issues, like troubles with external storage devices, have been resolved.

However, others are still encountering problems, such as the ADB over Ethernet feature not functioning and the Gboard app crashing after the update. On a positive note, many users have reported that random app crashes have been fixed.

For Chromecast with Google TV owners, checking for the update is simple. Navigate to Settings, then System, followed by About, and select System update to install the latest version.
