Many current flagship Android smartphones are beginning to appear quite similar. They showcase high-end materials, feature the latest Android operating system, offer impressive cameras, and incorporate some AI functionalities, creating a somewhat uniform user experience.
Although manufacturers attempt to add their unique touch, the fundamental experience on these latest devices has become largely indistinguishable. Furthermore, when these devices malfunction, repair processes can often be cumbersome.
In contrast, Fairphone stands out by providing smartphones designed for easy repair. Users can order interchangeable parts and replace them independently instead of relying on repair shops.
Recently, Fairphone announced the launch of the Fairphone 6, further distinguishing itself in a market filled with similar offerings. The Fairphone 6 is notable for its collaboration with Murena, the developer of /e/OS—a de-Googled operating system.
While it operates on Android, it comes without Google Play Services or any Google apps in its default settings. Instead, it utilizes microG to replicate Google’s functionalities, prioritizing a private and tracking-free experience for users.
Murena emphasizes that /e/OS is engineered to prevent data collection and scrutiny from third-party applications from the outset. This operating system is equipped with its suite of applications such as Mail, Calendar, Murena Workspace, and Murena Vault, which offers end-to-end encryption alongside improved parental controls and SMS-based Find My Device functionality.
In terms of hardware, details about the Fairphone 6 remain somewhat scarce. It features a Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 processor, Gorilla Glass 7i for display protection, and a larger battery housed in a compact design, although specific battery capacity information has yet to be released.
The phone also includes a dynamic 50MP camera, though it’s uncertain if this is the primary sensor or part of a triple-camera system. As with its earlier models, the Fairphone 6 maintains a modular, repairable structure, boasting 12 user-replaceable parts that can be ordered from the company and installed without special expertise.
The Fairphone 6 is now available for purchase on Murena’s website for customers in the UK and Europe, and while it is set to launch in the US, it is currently available for pre-order only, with shipments slated to start in August 2025. Overall, the Fairphone 6 embraces its ethical design ethos by maintaining a repairable structure and incorporating a privacy-focused operating system, along with a five-year warranty on the device.
