Google Phone Redesign Simplifies Interface by Eliminating Multiple Tabs for Material 3 Expressive Style

When Google introduced Android 16, the new design took center stage, overshadowing discussions about its features. A key component of this update is Material 3 Expressive, which is being gradually implemented across various Google applications.

The Phone app has recently received this visual overhaul, joining other apps that are already showcasing the new design. In a blog post, Google announced enhancements to the Phone app aimed at streamlining navigation between contacts and call logs.

The previous bottom menu has been simplified, condensing the options from “Favorites,” “Recents,” “Contacts,” and “Voicemail” to just “Home,” “Keypad,” and “Voicemail.” Important filters like “Missed,” “Spam,” and “Contacts” have now been relocated to the top of the Home tab.

The changes in the Home tab are significant. Now, favorites and call logs are combined, with prominent icons for favored contacts displayed at the top, followed by the full call history.

The call log interface has also been improved; calls from the same number are no longer grouped, making it easier to track repeated attempts to connect. Additionally, the call history has undergone a visual revamp, with recent calls presented in rounded boxes featuring contrasting backgrounds.

The former “Contacts” tab has been removed, and the Keypad tab now takes a central position, effectively replacing the old floating action button that was visible across different tabs. In a further effort to enhance user experience, Google is testing a new swipe gesture to answer or decline calls.

This feature aims to address issues associated with accidental answers or declines when retrieving phones from pockets. Currently available for beta testers through the Play Store, these updates reflect user feedback and are expected to be released to all users soon.
