AI technology can significantly ease the process of reviewing lengthy documents and PDFs by providing concise summaries. This functionality also proves useful for staying updated on essential news when time is limited. Meta has now introduced a similar feature for WhatsApp, utilizing Meta AI to summarize unread messages in chats, allowing users to quickly catch up on ongoing conversations. The Message Summaries feature will leverage Meta AI to create brief overviews of unread messages.
It employs Meta’s Private Processing technology, ensuring that the content of the messages remains private and is not accessible to anyone else. While your messages are temporarily uploaded to Meta servers for processing, the company assures users that no third parties will have access to this information. Importantly, the generated summaries will be exclusive to the individual user, meaning that others in a group chat will not see these summaries. For those concerned about privacy, the Message Summaries feature is turned off by default.
Once activated, it will also not automatically generate summaries for unread messages in group chats. Users need to click on the notification of unread messages to receive a summary. WhatsApp further enhances user control by allowing individuals to choose which conversations can use AI features, and if advanced privacy options are set for a chat, the summaries cannot be accessed. Earlier this year, Meta integrated AI into WhatsApp, allowing interaction with an AI chatbot and image generation.
However, the Message Summaries feature appears to be a more practical addition for daily use, marking WhatsApp as the first major messaging platform to implement such a tool. While Apple has also introduced a comparable feature in iOS 18.2, it has faced criticism for providing inaccurate summaries. Currently, WhatsApp’s Message Summaries will only be available in the US for English texts, with plans for broader language and regional support later.
