New Update Makes Sharing Locations on Google Maps More Tap-Intensive

The share sheet is the pop-up interface commonly seen when sharing photos, files, or other content. It serves as a bridge to send your items where they need to go, offering a range of options for sharing with friends, via email, or on social media. Last year, Google streamlined its sharing experience on Android by replacing custom share menus in first-party apps like Maps with a standardized native share sheet.

This change signified a departure from the previous Maps setup and introduced a more uniform approach, making it easier to quickly share with frequently contacted people. However, it appears that another significant redesign is imminent, which may be a mixed bag for users. A recent APK teardown by Android Authority suggests that Google is working on a simplified share sheet for its Maps navigation app.

This new layout focuses on three main options: “Share this place,” “Copy link,” and “Share as a collaborative list.” The change was first highlighted by user @TechA7mad and can be seen in the app’s version 25.26.01.774458481. Currently, when selecting a location in Google Maps and tapping the share button, users have access to a variety of sharing options.

They can copy links, send information directly to frequent contacts, or share via other apps. There is also a feature for adding locations to a collaborative list, making it easy to create shared itineraries. The enhancement of collaborative lists—essentially group chats for locations where users can propose and vote on places—highlights Google’s emphasis on this feature by making it more prominent in the share sheet.

While this is great for group planning, it may make direct sharing of specific locations slightly less convenient, as it may take extra taps assuming this change rolls out to all users. Nevertheless, the traditional option to copy and share links remains available.
