Google has announced an exciting update to its Classroom suite, introducing new AI tools that aim to enhance the educational experience. Among the highlights are the inclusion of free Gemini features for educators and the upcoming availability of NotebookLM for users under the age of 18. This marks a significant step in integrating advanced technology into education, a field that greatly benefits from such innovations.
Beginning now, teachers with Google Workspace accounts will notice a new “Gemini” tab in Classroom. This feature acts as an AI assistant, enabling educators to brainstorm lesson plans, create math problems, and draft communications with parents. Additionally, educators with Education Plus Edition accounts can further enhance their offerings with “Gemini audio lessons.” A new “Analytics” tab will also assist teachers in tracking student progress, allowing them to identify those who are improving as well as those who may need extra support.
In a noteworthy development, Google plans to make its NotebookLM research and note-taking tool available to users under 18 in the near future. Previously limited to adults and enterprise clients, NotebookLM utilizes Gemini-powered AI to create interactive study guides and podcast-style audio summaries based on teaching materials. Educators will also have the ability to create custom “Gems,” which are miniature AI agents focused on specific curriculum topics, providing students with additional resources.
The enhancements do not stop there. Administrators will be able to share these Gems across their districts, facilitating collaboration among teachers. The update also includes a suite of AI-powered educational tools: Google Vids for video creation, a “help me create a form” generator, and features like Class Tools that give teachers control over student Chromebooks during lessons.
Finally, Google is streamlining its AI branding. Gemini Education will now serve as the standard AI tier for basic educational accounts, and existing add-ons will be consolidated under a new subscription model titled “Google AI Pro for Education.” This expansion coincides with improvements to NotebookLM, including new sharing capabilities and interactive elements that enhance the learning experience even further.
