Google recently launched the Android 16 update for Pixel devices, but fans are eager for the forthcoming QPR update. While the stable version did not introduce substantial visual changes, the next update promises to unveil the new Material 3 Expressive design language. This fresh aesthetic will feature new shapes, adaptable typography, and dynamic, bouncy animations, giving devices a refreshed appearance.
In anticipation of the new design, Google has begun updating its applications to align with Material 3 Expressive. The Phone app, Play Store, and Gmail have already received updates, marking the first phase of this design implementation. Particularly for Gmail on Android, users can expect even more visual transformations soon.
According to app researcher AssembleDebug, additional changes to the Gmail app are in the works. Screenshots shared by Android Authority showcase notable differences between the current design and the upcoming refinements. For instance, the hamburger menu has been relocated outside the search bar, with the Gemini icon now nestled within it.
Additionally, the profile icon has been repositioned to improve user flow. In the main mailbox view, emails are now separated by lines, echoing the layout of other Google apps that have adopted the new design. Moreover, the compose button has received a more vibrant color, enhancing its visibility.
Changes within the email view include the removal of the “Reply all” button from quick actions, while “Reply” and “Forward” buttons have been redesigned and repositioned for easier access. While these enhancements are not yet live in the Gmail app, they have been identified in build version 2025.06.22.776133050.Release of the app. They were manually activated for viewing, indicating that Google could roll them out at any time.
