Google Gemini’s Upcoming Feature: Enhanced Support for RCS Messaging

Gemini offers users the ability to create images, which can then be sent to friends or family through Google Messages. However, there’s a catch: instead of sending the actual image, the AI chatbot currently provides a blank URL. This limitation arises because the app uses SMS rather than MMS or RCS for sharing images. Recognizing this issue, Google appears to be actively working on a solution.

During an analysis of the latest Google app for Android (version 16.25.44), the Android Authority team discovered hints that Google is exploring the integration of RCS capabilities into Gemini. By enabling RCS support, the AI chatbot would be able to share AI-generated images, videos, and other multimedia content directly within Google Messages, enhancing the user experience significantly. At present, Google’s handling of multimedia in Gemini still requires improvement. Users can also request the chatbot to share images via WhatsApp, but it only transmits a link instead of the actual image.

This shortcoming is another area where Google is expected to make updates, especially with the anticipated enhancements to Gemini’s multimedia sharing features. The integration of RCS support is poised to boost Gemini’s functionality. Presently, while users can issue voice commands for specific tasks, the scope of these commands is still quite limited. As Google refines this feature and incorporates RCS, the potential for improved interactions will expand.

For example, a user might ask Gemini to send a recent photo from their gallery directly to a spouse or share a PDF from Google Drive with colleagues. With RCS capability, these actions would allow the direct attachment of files and images instead of sending them as mere links. To truly become a proactive AI assistant, Gemini will need to strengthen its integration with various Android services and functionalities.
