Google Keep Begins Its Exciting Transformation with Material 3’s Expressive Update

Google Keep has long been a favorite note-taking app for Android users, thanks to its user-friendly interface, cloud synchronization, and accessibility across various devices like smartphones and laptops. However, there was a time when it seemed Google might have put the app on the back burner, as updates were infrequent, leaving its future in doubt. Fortunately, earlier this year, Google began revitalizing Google Keep by releasing updates for the Android version of the app, including a Material 3 Expressive redesign for its Wear OS counterpart. Excitingly, it now looks like this new visual style is making its way to the smartphone version of Google Keep.

Users on Telegram were among the first to notice that an update (version 5.25.252.00.90) is being rolled out, showcasing Material 3 Expressive design features. While this redesign is not as drastic as the recent makeover for Gmail, it does bring noticeable aesthetic changes to the app. One of the key updates involves the search bar, which has been revamped. The account switcher and the three-line menu have been relocated to their own spaces in the top bar, and the search bar now reads “Search Keep.” Other Material 3 enhancements can be seen on the note-taking interface; for instance, buttons have rounded corners and are set against contrasting backgrounds.

Additionally, Keep has adopted Dynamic Theming, allowing it to pull colors from your wallpaper to create a more cohesive look. The icons in the top toolbar have been enlarged and styled with rounded backgrounds to fit the new design. While the new UI appears to be linked to the latest Play Store update, it seems to be deployed gradually. Users with different devices, such as my Pixel 9 Pro running the latest beta, might not see the new look immediately.
