Google has introduced its version of Apple’s Live Activities feature with the rollout of Android 16. Known as Live Updates, this new notification class is designed to provide real-time information about activities such as food delivery, ride-hailing pickups, navigation, and timers. One notable aspect of Live Updates is their elevated permissions, which allow these notifications to be displayed above standard notifications in the status bar and on the lock screen. Although Android 16 began its stable rollout in early June, the Live Updates feature appeared with limited capacity.
Full support for Live Updates is anticipated to be available later this year, with an eventual expansion to Wear OS devices. The initial version of Android 16 allowed apps to create Live Update notifications, but it treated them like standard notifications. Consequently, even when using a progress-style notification template, developers found that notifications did not fully expand as expected. While Google indicated that complete Live Updates support is forthcoming, it has not provided a specific launch timeline.
The omission of this feature in Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1 raised questions about its release schedule. However, subsequent updates, such as Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 and Beta 2.1, hinted at progress. Insights from credible Android analyst Mishaal Rahman, published in Android Authority, revealed that full Live Updates support was initially disabled in early QPR betas. The shift in requirements for notifications to qualify as Live Updates complicated matters.
Notifications must now meet additional criteria, including declaring a new POST_PROMOTED_NOTIFICATIONS permission and invoking the requestPromotedOngoing API. These changes are present in the recent QPR1 updates but were absent from the Android 16 stable version. Rahman’s testing with a sample app successfully demonstrated the full Live Updates experience, suggesting that stable support is likely to be included in the first Android 16 quarterly release scheduled for September.
