Google currently allows users to enjoy most YouTube features without a subscription. However, whether you are a free user or a premium member, there are certain features that may hinder your experience. While opinions may vary on what is helpful or not, some poorly received features are gaining attention, including a new addition that focuses on YouTube Shorts.
YouTube recently rolled out a “Rotate Shorts” feature, which is designed to provide users the option to watch Shorts in landscape mode. Traditionally, Shorts are made to be viewed in portrait orientation, similar to short-form content on platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels. The portrait format aligns better with how we typically hold our phones.
The new feature has been flagged by Android Authority, which observed it on their Pixel 9 Pro XL via the YouTube Accessibility settings. Despite its potential advantages, many find the feature unappealing. When watching Shorts in landscape, the sides of the screen remain blank, detracting from an immersive viewing experience.
Additionally, all control options appear concentrated on one side of the screen, replicating the layout from portrait mode. This Rotate Shorts capability is being rolled out through a server-side update, meaning some users may not see it immediately. For those who prefer the conventional viewing experience, it’s important to note that YouTube will not enable this feature by default.
If you want to experiment with rotating Shorts, you can do so by toggling the option in the YouTube settings. If not, simply continue enjoying the Shorts in portrait mode.
