Today’s smartphones boast large displays that can showcase abundant visuals. While apps aim to utilize screen space optimally, not all tasks require full-screen dedication. Efficiency often demands the ability to switch between activities seamlessly, without the hassle of completely closing one app to open another. In response to this need, Google has been developing a more advanced split-screen feature.
With its latest Android Canary release, users are getting a glimpse of the much-anticipated 90:10 split-screen ratio. Fortunately, familiar ratios like 70:30, 50:50, and 30:70 will still be available, ensuring users can choose what fits their needs best. The concept of a split-screen experience is not new, but recent technological advancements have heightened its usability. A report from May highlighted Google’s interest in a more flexible screen-sharing capability.
Samsung quickly adapted by implementing the 90:10 feature in their One UI 8 beta. Android expert Mishaal Rahman has confirmed the appearance of this new ratio within the Android Canary program, aimed at Pixel users eager for early access. While this feature is now accessible to those with recent Pixel devices, it’s important to note that installing a Canary build can lead to bugs, and reverting requires a complete device reset. The 90:10 split-screen design allows one app to occupy a mere 10% of the display, while the other takes the majority.
Switching between applications remains user-friendly with just a tap. Although it’s uncertain when this feature will roll out to the general public, early access users can finally see it coming together. Fortunately, for those who prefer not to use such an extreme format, there will be no obligation to do so.
