Smart home devices, like those in Belkin’s Wemo lineup, present a challenge due to their dependence on proprietary software and cloud services. If these systems fail or the servers shut down, the products can become obsolete. This situation is about to impact many users, as Belkin’s Wemo devices will lose app control and access to cloud services by January 31, 2026. This change means that many devices, which once offered convenience through smart technology, risk becoming useless.
Despite the popularity of Wemo products, they have not seen new models introduced in several years. The announcement regarding the loss of app support comes from a tip by Artem Russakovskii, the founder of Android Police. While Belkin has indicated they will provide refunds for devices still under warranty at the time of the shutdown, most users are unlikely to qualify given the age of the products; the most recent device was sold only in November 2023. Some devices, notably those that support Thread connectivity or HomeKit, will retain functionality on respective platforms, but the bulk of Wemo’s offerings will fall into obsolescence.
For users who want to retain some utility from their Wemo devices, there is an opportunity through Home Assistant, an open-source smart home platform that unites numerous brands. Though it’s not the most user-friendly option, it has made significant advancements. Currently, it supports various Wemo devices such as motion sensors and lights. However, some hurdles remain, particularly the lack of in-app configuration that may complicate the transition for average users.
In this context, tech-savvy individuals with programming skills could explore ways to revitalize Wemo devices through the Home Assistant platform, preventing them from ending up as e-waste.
