Community Revives Beloved EmojiTracker with Collective Effort and Enthusiasm

After nearly two years of inactivity, EmojiTracker.com has made a triumphant return, relaunching just in time for World Emoji Day. This revamped version has been revitalized by Emojipedia, marking its evolution beyond Twitter’s unreliable API. The site is now powered by a broader global user base and no longer relies solely on the ever-changing landscape of Twitter. EmojiTracker first emerged in July 2013, shortly before Emojipedia went live.

The original site offered an engaging, real-time feed of emoji usage across Twitter, captivating users with its rapid visual display. Unfortunately, with Twitter’s rebranding to X and subsequent API restrictions under Elon Musk, the site eventually became defunct. The newly revived EmojiTracker is now more expansive, supporting all 3,790 Unicode-approved emojis, moving beyond the initial 842 from Unicode 6.0. It gathers live emoji usage data from Emojipedia’s vast reach, ensuring a more sustainable and organized experience for users.

One of the standout features of the updated EmojiTracker is its improved user interface and the introduction of geo-specific filters. Users can now compare how different countries utilize specific emojis, such as how the Philippines uses the 😭 emoji compared to Germany or the UK. The filters currently cover regions such as the US, UK, India, Brazil, Philippines, France, Germany, Australia, Japan, and a general ā€œOtherā€ category. Despite Twitter’s apparent neglect of the Twemoji project, the emoji set continues to exist in various online spaces like Discord and Roblox, albeit without further development.

In contrast, EmojiTracker is actively maintained and plans to incorporate a wealth of historical usage data gathered by Emojipedia. For veteran enthusiasts, a nostalgic ā€œhidden featureā€ from the original site remains intact, ready to be rediscovered. This revival is a meaningful return for a platform that captures the essence of communication through emojis, reflecting our collective emotions in an increasingly digital world.
