Recent update appears to have disrupted Google Chrome functionality for numerous users

Recently, a significant bug in Google Chrome emerged, leading the browser to crash on various platforms. Initially, it was discovered that Microsoft’s Family Safety application was interfering with Chrome’s functionality. However, new reports indicate that Chrome is once again facing widespread issues, with numerous users stating that the browser either fails to open or freezes upon launching. Discussion about these problems began circulating about a week ago on platforms like Reddit and Google’s official support forum, coinciding with the Chrome stable channel’s update to version 138.0.7204.100/.101.

Notably, the issue appears to be affecting only Windows and Mac users, with no such reports from Android users. One frustrated user shared their experience on the support forum, stating, “I updated Chrome, and it never re-opened… I uninstalled and re-installed it, and it still won’t launch.” Others echoed similar sentiments, mentioning issues like lag, black screens, and frequent freezing.

Despite these widespread complaints, the issue does not seem to impact every user universally. For instance, some individuals, including myself, remain on the same updated version of Chrome without experiencing any glitches. For Windows users, the most common issue is that the browser simply doesn’t launch, while Mac users may find that Chrome launches but subsequently freezes. The root cause of the bug has yet to be identified, although the new Chrome build is likely to blame, as users note that Chrome Canary, a beta version, is functioning without glitches.

Google has acknowledged these issues. As stated by a Platinum Product Expert on their support forum, this problem is recognized and has been added to the list for further investigation. While there is no specific timeline for a fix, some users have reported that unchecking the ‘Run as administrator’ option may provide a temporary solution.
