Samsung Shows New Enthusiasm for Qi2 Wireless Charging Technology

It’s been more than two years since the Wireless Power Consortium unveiled the MagSafe-like Qi2 wireless charging standard. Qi2 introduced the Magnetic Power Profile, which enables devices to align accurately with wireless chargers to provide faster and more efficient charging. However, even though the standard has been available for over a year, no Android original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have completely adopted Qi2.

Some brands, such as OnePlus and Samsung, have rolled out official cases that offer similar functionality, but their smartphones have yet to officially support Qi2 charging right out of the box. Recent developments suggest that Samsung may be on the verge of integrating Qi2 wireless charging in its devices. Android Authority recently reported that Samsung conducted a survey through the Samsung Members app, inquiring about users’ experiences with wireless charging.

Notably, many questions pertained directly to Qi2, such as whether users see the value in built-in magnets for wireless charging, and whether they would be willing to accept a slightly thicker phone to accommodate this feature. The company also probed whether magnet-based Qi2 charging would alleviate inconvenience for users with devices that support only wireless charging. Additionally, Samsung sought to understand how frequently users utilize their USB-C ports and for what activities (such as charging or data transfer).

While this survey does not confirm the implementation of Qi2, it indicates that Samsung is exploring customer interest in the technology. Android users have expressed a desire for Qi2 support, which would address common wireless charging issues and enhance compatibility with various accessories, such as external SSDs and ring lights. With Google reportedly contemplating Qi2 wireless charging for its upcoming Pixel 10, it seems Samsung might finally be taking the prospect more seriously.
