The recent launch of Nothing’s Phone 3 has generated a flurry of opinions, punctuated by mixed reviews from renowned tech YouTubers like MKBHD and Mrwhosetheboss. In response, Carl Pei, CEO of Nothing, released a video to elucidate the company’s vision and defend what he describes as their boldest phone yet.
Pei acknowledged the critical reception with candid remarks, saying, “We started this company because we were bored,” suggesting that the market was oversaturated with similar designs. The Phone 3’s design diverges notably from Nothing’s previous models.
The beloved glyph lights are absent, replaced by a monochrome dot-matrix display on the rear panel. Critics widely critiqued this move as asymmetrical and gimmicky, with MKBHD even describing it as “ugly.” Pei, however, touted the intentionality behind the design.
He explained that the asymmetry stems from engineering decisions that improve the device’s functionality and stated his belief that users would eventually appreciate the change, just as they came to love the glyph lights. Pricing has also come under fire, as the Phone 3 is set at $799, making it pricier than several competitors.
Pei addressed this concern, asserting that Nothing’s component costs are higher due to their relatively smaller market share, emphasizing that they are not aiming to compete on price alone. Despite the critiques, the software remains a shining element for Nothing.
Reviewers have praised Nothing OS 3.5 for its clean and bloatware-free experience. Pei teased upcoming updates and enhancements to the user experience, particularly through features like “Essential Search.”
Ultimately, Pei made clear that Nothing isn’t aiming to appeal to everyone.
They are focused on creating unique devices for those who are looking for something different. For consumers seeking personality in their tech, the Phone 3 might just embody the essence of the Nothing brand.
