Gboard Reintroduces Beloved Compact Emoji Picker for Enhanced User Experience

Google frequently experiments with its apps, particularly Gboard, its popular keyboard. The company often rolls out subtle UI changes, many of which are quietly discontinued before reaching a wider audience.

Recently, a feature introduced in the Gboard beta earlier this year has begun to be rolled back, specifically the revisions to the emoji, GIF, and sticker picker. Back in May, Gboard’s redesign for beta users featured larger, more spaced-out buttons, which strayed from the keyboard’s familiar compact design.

However, instead of marking a new version, Google is now reverting to the more compact interface for both beta and stable users. Longtime users of Gboard will likely appreciate this return to the familiar layout.

One of the most significant improvements is the reinstatement of the backspace key to its original position. This change is essential for users, as the May redesign had altered its placement, disrupting established routines.

With the return of squircle-shaped buttons and tighter spacing, users will find navigating the emoji picker more intuitive. Though the compact layout has returned, it comes with some quirks.

Some users have noted that the new UI appears left-aligned on certain devices, giving it an off-center appearance. However, many devices display a centered layout that includes a horizontal carousel for accessing Bitmoji, resulting in an overall polished experience compared to the previous beta.

Additionally, Google continues to innovate with new features. Certain devices, notably the Pixel 9 series, have introduced a button for AI-generated stickers powered by Gemini.

While currently exclusive to unreleased Pixel 9 phones, these stickers may become available more broadly with the upcoming Pixel 10 series. Overall, Gboard users can find solace in the return to familiar functionality, at least until Google’s next set of experiments begins.
