Gemini Begins to Replace Google Assistant on Additional Wear OS Smartwatches

Google recently began the rollout of its Gemini AI assistant for Wear OS devices starting with the Galaxy Watch 8 and Pixel Watch. Following some teasing at I/O 2025, the company is now extending this rollout to include a wider range of Wear OS watches. Typically, Google’s release of new features takes a few weeks, but this initial rollout may have further expansions over several weeks. Fortunately, users won’t have to wait long to access Gemini’s capabilities on their smartwatches.

Reports indicate that access is expanding to Wear OS users with devices from brands like Samsung, Xiaomi, and OnePlus that run Wear OS 5 or earlier versions. Users should look for an update to the Gemini app on the Wear OS Play Store. If the app updates automatically, you’ll receive a notification informing you that the AI assistant is ready to use. To interact with Gemini, you can either hold down the side button or say “Hey Google,” provided that the necessary settings are enabled.

Additionally, users can quickly access Gemini features using the Google tile or by adding a complication to their watch face. The interaction with Gemini aims to enhance the user experience by offering more intuitive voice commands compared to previous Google Assistant options. Although Google is rumored to be working on a new raise-to-speak gesture for Gemini, that feature has not been officially launched yet. Importantly, Gemini relies on connectivity: it does not process data locally and requires a connection to either a phone or LTE.

Some users on Reddit mentioned still having access to Google Assistant after the app updated to Gemini, which may be due to pending server-side changes not yet affecting their devices. For those experiencing issues, restarting the watch may help, but in some cases, patience may be required as Google finalizes the rollout.
