Google Addresses Blurry Vision Issues with Update for Gemini Live

Google’s Gemini Live is quickly gaining traction as an essential tool for many users, primarily due to its Project Astra features. However, a recent issue regarding the quality of the tool’s video feed has left some users frustrated. First introduced at Google I/O 2024, this conversational AI assistant enables users to engage in natural conversations while also allowing them to inquire about the on-screen context and what the AI perceives through the phone camera’s live feed. This functionality makes it a powerful asset for anyone seeking real-time, context-aware information on the go.

Nevertheless, some users have reported problems with the video feed’s quality in Gemini Live’s Project Astra capabilities. Google is currently addressing these concerns. Although I have not personally experienced this on either Android or iOS, it has been noted that many users have been facing degraded video quality in recent weeks. A glance at discussions on Reddit suggests this issue has persisted for at least a month.

A reduction in video feed resolution can hinder Gemini Live’s ability to accurately identify objects and create frustration, especially for users with accessibility needs. Google is keen to ensure that its flagship AI tool does not suffer from such preventable issues and is promptly implementing a fix. Users have noted experiencing blurry video when sharing their camera through the Android app. Google appreciates this feedback and states that a resolution to improve camera quality is being rolled out.

As part of the fix, Google is performing a server-side update, as there is no app update to download at this moment. Interestingly, this update appears to have reversed a convenient shortcut introduced earlier in June; on Android, swiping left no longer provides quick access to Gemini Live. Users will now need to rely solely on the dedicated icon to access the conversational AI.
